Kabbalah: Also Qabalah. The word 'Kabbalah' is derived from the Hebrew root kbl ' to receive, to accept' an in many cases is used synonymously with 'tradition.Kabbalah is the Jewish mystical tradition, especially the system of esoteric mystical speculation and practice that developed during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.Kabbalistic interest, at first confined to a select few, became the preoccupation of large numbers of Jews following ' their explusion from Spain (1492) an Portugal (1495).Like every other Jewish religion expression, Kabbalah was based on the Old Testament revelation but was enormously developed and expanded. The revealed text was interpreted with the aid of various hermeneutic techniques.Of the many methods available, the Kabbalists most frequent used three forms of letter and number symbolism: Gematria, Notarikon and Temurah

The Kabbalah is very old, dating back to at least the first century AD, and much of its knowledge was passed on orally within the priesthood or within groups of the priesthood. The major written texts date from the 12th & 13th centuries. The classic document of the Kabbalistic tradition - the Zohar (Book of Light), was compiled by Moses de Leon about 1290.The doctrine of creation was build on a theory of emanations and asserted that the world derived from transcendent and unknowable God through a series of increasingly material manifestations (Sephirot)

The Sephirot form the central image of Kabbalistic meditation, the Sephirothic Tree of Life, which describes the path of descent from the divine to the material realm and the path of ascent to the highest level of attainment in knowledge, corresponding to energy centres in the body, and is also divided into four interlocking sections or 'Worlds' which constitute the cosmos: Emanation (Atziluth), Creation (Briah), Formation (Yetzirah) and Action or Making (Assiyah).Through contemplation and meditation, similar to Eastern yogic disciplines, the Kabbalist ascends the Tree of Life

The Serhirot, also comprise the sacred, unknowable and unspeakable personal name of God: YHVH (Yahweh), the Tetragrammaton. So Sacred is the Tetragrammaton that other names, such as Elohim, Jehovah, are substituted in its place in scripture. A more systematic presentation of the basic doctrine is contained in Moses Cordovero's Pardes rimmonim (Gardern of Pomegranates -1548). Kabbalah, was a major influence in the development of Hasidism and still has adherents among Hasidic Jews. The Kabbalah, with its amulets, incantions, demonolgy, seals and letters and number mysticism, had a profound influence on Western magical tradition. The Tetragrammaton especially was held in great awe for its power over all things in the Universe, including demons

Karma: Oriental doctrine of cause & effect & related to reincarnation - which teaches essentially that every thought and ded must eventually create its own effects, which must then be endured or enjoyed by the individual concerned.Unresolved situations from past lives that can carry over into the current life

Karma is a A term, derived from the Sanskrit for 'deed' which describes the fundamental concept in Hinduism and Buddhism that thoughts and deeds determine the consequences of one's life and rebirth. Karma may therefore loosely be described as the Law of Consequences. In a popular sense, Karma is sometimes regarded as the Eastern equivalent of the Western 'destiny' or 'fate', but this is an erroneous view. Karma is properly regarded as the Fruit of Actions in a previous lifetime, which determines the conditions of a live in a subsequent incarnation, this is quite different from the Western concept of destiny, which is not necessarily connected with deeds of a previous existence. Karma can be either good or bad, with relative consequences, and is generally viewed as inescapable, although various techniques and chanting exist to try to mitigate it

In its more elaborate form, the doctrine refers to the 'Lords Of Karma' - divine beings responsible for maintaining the Balance of Cosmic Debt, but Western notions of judgement are actually quite foreign to the though processes which produced Karmic theory. On the personal level, an indvidual typically generates a 'burden of Karma' - which can be good or bad - carried from one life to the next and worked out (repaid) over aeons of time until - particularly in Buddhist thought, enlightenment permits a situation on which no furher Karma, of any sort , is generated and the reserve is dissipated

A basic tenet of the Aetherius Society, which he founded shortly afterwards, is that the Masters, including Jesus Christ, periodically visit humanity in flying saucers

Kings' Evil: Up to the early 18th century, it was believed that the touch of the king's hand could cure the disease 'scrofula' Tuberculosis of the Lymphatic glands. It is recorded that durning his reign King Chalrs II touched over 92,000 of his subjects

Kirk, Robert (c.1644-1692): The Scottish clergyman is author of a strange book 'The Secret Commonwealth' in 1691.It is an account of his dealings with the kingdom of the fairies and also those of other people from his parish of Aberfoyle, where many seemed gifted with 'second sight'

Kirlian Photohgraphy: Russian Professor of Engineering, Semyon Kirlian and his wife Valentina were the first persons to photograph the human Aura through the use of high-frequency current. It was the start of something very interesting indeed. The Kirlians used their new method of high-frequency electronic photography to make a great many pictures. Those which involved living tissue - even plant tissue - like a leaf, showed sparks and flares of energy in patterns as dramatic as they were beautiful. A dead leaf showed nothing of these patterns. Eerily when a portion of a leaf was torn or cut away, Kirlian photography clearly showed a ghostly image of the missing piece. What all this meant was anybody's guess and those doing the guessing were for almost 40 years, all Soviets

Then two American travel writers , Sheila Ostrander and Lynn Schroeder, published a best selling book entitled 'Psychic Discoveries behind the Iron Curtain-Sphere 1973' which described the discovery and suddenly everybody in the West, wanted to know more about Kirlian Photography. Everybody, except the scientific establishment, which pointed out that similar effects had been recognized since the early years of the twentieth century. If a roll of film is connected to electricity lines, it will show distinctive tree-like patterns, if there is a sudden surge in voltage - the patterns are known as Lichtenburg figures after their discovery, Jiri Lichtenburg. Closer to the actual Kirlian technique, it was argued that since the voltage in any high-frequency condenser is far from constnt, the ionization it causes is bound to show up as strange spots and flares on any photograph

This was all very well except that more adventurous and open-minded research projects using Kirlian photographs of human volunteers soon showed that the Aura effect varied in relation to the subject's mood and were influenced by personality interactions. Careful analysis of Kirlian photographs of the human showed flares at precisely those points used for thousands of years in the practise of Chinese acupuncture

From there it was a short step to the discovery of a relationship between the strenght of the Kirlian 'field' and health. Illness showed up as a weakening in the Aura, sometimes before physical symptoms manifested. In the Neuropsychiatric Institiute at UCLA California, the scientific team of Thelma Moss and Ken Johnson constructed Kirlian apparatus which showed energy flares emitted by the fingertips of faith healers as they exercised their art. Work with Kirlian photography continues with indications that it may yet add substantially to our knowledge of such subjects of New Age interest as the Etheric Body, Life after death and healing

In England Jiddu Krishnamurti was intensively groomed as the next incarnation of Lord Maitreya, the New World Teacher. His own mystical organization, hhe Order of the Star of the East, was established for him and as a teenage guru, he quickly attracted thousands of followers

The lifestyle did not agree with him and in 1929 he threw his hat at the whole sorry business - dissolved the Order and told his followers to find another guru since he had no Spiritual authority whatsoever. In his way, this move was a genuine vindication of Besant and Leadbeater's conviction that they had found a most remarkable personality. Having repudiated Theosophy, Krishnamurti went forth with the message that all beliefs are mental and spiritua lstrait-jackets and all religions a convenient way to offload responsibility for one's personal state. The road to freedom and enlightenment was simply self-observation and the only difficulty to be overcome was the age-old problem of actually getting down to it. He died in 1985 at 91

Kundalini is likened in Esoteric Yoga to a serpent coiled at the base of the spine. The power of Kundalini is claimed to be awesoome and beyond description. The energy is aroused to travel upwards along the spine and 'strike' again like a serpent, into the brain. What happens when the 'serpent' strikes depends on how Kundalini has been aroused.
