Asanas: Special postures of Hatha Yoga. When Westerners were first exposed to Yoga techniques,it was assumed that the purpose of the postures - which often appear bizarre to European eyes - was to stretch ligaments and exercise muscles. Although Asanas do indeed do this, further investigation soon showed they went further. In the cross-legged lotus and perfect postures for example, the lower body gradualy loses sensation and ceases to exercise a disruptive influence on the fmind, making these Asanas ideal for meditation

With the New Age development of more open-minded viewpoints in the West, further subtleties have emerged and it now appears that the majority of Yoga Asanas are designed to influence currents of subtle energy within the human body

Astragalomancy: A term derived from the Greek astragalos (dice / knucklebone) and manteia (divination) and applied to a method of telling the future from throw of dice or bones

Astral: The term appears to be derived from the Latin for 'star' and is sometimes applied to the stellar world as descriptive of the fabric of the heavens. In occult and strological terminology, the astral plane is contiguous in space (inf not in time) with the material realm, it is the one which the spiritual part of a human being enters during periods of sleep and after death. The astral realm is one normally invisible to ordinary sight, yet it is the proper dwelling of the higher spiritual bodies of man

Astral Body: Desire Body.Subtle bodies or Etheric Bodies.A name given to the Spiritual appearance of the physical bodyh. The Astral Body is said by occultists and Clairvoyants to be of a fine, highly luminous and vibrating nature, flooded with colours of indescribable beauty.Occultists regard the Astral Body as having an independent existence on the Astral Plane during periods when the Physical body is asleep or when a person consciously indulges in Astral Travel (OOBE)

Africa's Azande tribe believe that everyone has two souls- one of which the' imbisimo', leaves the body during sleep. In Burma, there is also a belief in a second soul which is likened to a butterfly. The Bacairis of South America talk of a shadow which travels out of the body when we fall asleep

A survey has shown no fewer that 57 cultures hold a firm belief of some sort of a second body. The figure would be substantially higher if ancient cultures were included. In ancient Egypt, it was commonly believed that humanity had three souls. These were known as the BA, the KA and the IB

The Ba was the bird-soul,the Ib was the heart, but the Ka,was known as the Double.Egyptians believed it to be a mirror image of the physical body, composed of finer matter. This Ka,under a variety of different names, would be recognized instantly by Yoga initiates of India,Tibet and China and by the New Age occultists. Many esoteric systems actually postulate a whole series of subtle bodies, one within the other, like a set of Russian dolls. This notion carried into Europe and America by Madame Blavatsky and her Thesophists, has taken firm root in Western New Age thought

How many bodies you are actualy believed to have - depends on the particular sub-system you are studying. Most authorities include the Astral,a Mental and a Spiritual.Eeach has its own characteristics, function and sphere of operation and each is composed of progressively finer material

The multiplicity has led to difficulties in terminology. The name 'Astal' is frequently applied to different subtle bodies which some authorities argue should be considered as separate and distinct. In particular, the Etheric body is often referred to as Astral

Astral Doorways: Essentially symbols or pictures which can be used to aid individuals in astral projection to the Astral Plane. The Tarot trumps, the I Ching hexagrams and even some forms of fantasy art can all be used in this way,but the definitive doorways, researched by members of the Golden Dawn and used by generations of magicians ever since are undoubtedly the Tattwas of the Eastern Esoteric Tradition. The major Tattwa symbols are: Earth-square-yellow,Air-circle-blue,Fire-triangle-red,Water-crescent-silver,Ether-oval-black or indigo

Astral Plane: Astral Light.Existence of an alternate dimension of reality.Plane that overlays Physical plane. The 18th century mystic Emmanuel Swedenborg recorded something what he believed to be a descent into hell .More recently, the conrtoversial antropologist,Carlos Castaneda, published details of an extensive series of trips through what he called the crack between the worlds'.William BVlake, the poet, visited heavenly spheres.Carl Jung, the psychologist, found himself transported to a phantasmagoric region of outer space.Every competent Shaman has travelled to 'Spirit Worlds' and brough back power. In rural Ireland,it is still possible to collect (second and occasionally first) hand reports of visits to a faery underworld

Astral Projection: When a person steps out of the physical body or projection of consciousness into another plane.Trances/meditation/hypnosis aid to astral projetion.Astral Projection is a tem which, though widely used in the New Age, actually means different things to different people. To some it suggests stepping out of the physical body to function like a ghost, passing through walls and doors, while generaly invisible to those still in their physical bodies. To others, it is the projection of consciousness into another world altogether, the fabled Astal Plane.Although carrying the same label and frequently confused in occult literature, these two experiences are quite distinct. The 'Astral Projection' during which one functions like a ghost is more propertly called 'Etheric Projection'

Astrology: Horoscopes / Stargazing. Is the pseudo-scientific study of the influence of planets /celestial bodies on Earth and the human affairs / the future. One of most ancient of the surviving Esoteric Arts and evidence of a highly sophisticated system in Babylonian & Egyptian cultures that has survived. It was practised in Sumeria, the world's oldest civilzation in 4300 BC and may actually have had its beginnings in the depths of prehistory, since there is some evidence of a study of the night sky by people of the Old Stone Age

It is also one of the most widespread of the Esoteric Arts today, albeit in a corrupt form disowned by most serious Astrologers. For them a horoscope is strictly a map of planetary positions as they appeared at the moment of an individual's birth from the geographical location where that birth occured. The fundamental calculations are Astronomical, but Astrologers not only seek to find planetary positions in relation to the Zodiac ( that belt in the sky defind by the sun's passages against the background of fixed stars) but also in relation to specialist sub-divisions known as 'Houses'

Atlanteans: Members of a British Philosophical Society dedicated to the belief in the importance of the individual and inspired from an Inner Plane Source.Healing,Meditation and new approach to the occult - all form part of the society's activities

Atlantis: Also referred to as the Sunken or Lost City of Atlantis.Said by some to have supported a high technological civilization with an advance understanding of Crystals

According to ancient myth, Atlantis is the name of the vast island continent, and the many civilisations which flourished on it, before being destroyed in a cataclysm. There are numerous legends regarding Atlanteans and how their advanced civilisations was destroyed by their misuse of power

A recent estimate that more than 1000 books have now been published on the subject of Atlantis is probably conservative. These works generally fall into three broad categories. Those which deny the literal truth of the Atlantis legend, but look for genuine historical events on which it may have been based. Those who seek to establish proof of the reality of Atlantis

And those - often derived from inspirational sources - which support to describe the lifestyle & history of the Atlantean Civilization.Into this category of works about Atlantis fall those of Madame Blavatsky ,who saw Atlantis as part of an 18,000,000 year human history and that the Atlanteans were descendants from another legendary lost continent,Lemuria asnd were the Fourth Root Race of all humans. She claimed that the information had come from the book of dyzan,an allegedly Atlantean work that had survived and was now in Tibet

The philosopher and occultist Rudolf Steiner ,claimed to be able to access the Akashic records which also described the Atlanteans as descendants of Lemurians. Some writers have speculated that the present-day American Indians, migraged from the Old World to the New by way of Atlantis

Edgar Cayce (the US famous sleeping Prophet)painted a picture of Atlantis that was, in many respects, like a science-fiction epic

Cayce believed, with a number of other Esoteric writers, that there were actually 3 sinkings of Atlantis and the one reported by Plato was only the last in a series which saw the gradual breaking up of a very considerable land mass.He placed Atlantis between the Gulf of Mexico on the one hand and the Mediterranean on the other.Portions of it now form parts of the Americas, the British West Indies and the Bahamas

In its geographical structure,Cayce saw the later,Atlantis as a series of islands, rather than a single undifferentiated continent. He taught that it supported a high technological civilization based on an understanding of crystals now lost to science. There are clear suggestions in his readings that at least one of the catastrophes which sank Atlantis was man-made,the result of heavy weaponry in a war which sought to free a slave race of artificially-created mutants

Atheism: Denying the existence of God or Spirituality

Atman: In Hindu Religion & philosophy,Atman is the Essential Self of a human being and as such is the one part of the individual which is Eternal.Atman is closely identified with Brahman, the unchanging reality behind surface appearance. This identification creates an even more interesting double linkage with certain aspects of Western esoteric thought. The first Qabalistic belief in Yesod, and Astral World of the imagination which forms the foundation of reality. The second is the insight by among others the visionary William Blake that the World of imagination is the world of Eternity

Augur: A soothsayer or diviner. Originally the term was applied to the priest or religious official who interpreted omens from the flight, song and feeding of birds (etyumologically connected with the Latin avis 'bird')From this also comes Augury, which means either the ac t of divining in this way or the forecast made as a result

Aura: Human atmosphere.Electromagnetic field of subtle energies that surrounds & protects the physical body in humans, animals, plants, planets, magnets & crystals

Belief in the emanation of vital energy from the body was present in ancient Egypt, India, Greece and Rome.In the 16th century Paracelsus discoursed on the Astral Body and its fiery Aura - the theory of Animal Magnetism advanced in the late 18th century by Franz Anton Mesmer prompted a variety of scientific experiments to try to isolate and identify the phenomena

Although the Aura is invisible to the normal eye, it can be seen through psychic vision and in 1911, a London doctor named W.R.Kilner developed a series of screens based on a dicyanin dye which he claimed could be used to train the eye to see Auras.Kilner distinguised severeal layers in the Aura.Kilner distinguished several layers in the Aura and like the industrial chemist Baron Karl von Reichenbach, half a century before him, insisted his screens showed Auras emanating from magnets

A particularly interesting aspect of Kilner's work was his conviction that changes in the appearance of the Aura could be used as a diagnostic tool - a belief shared by many psychics. There seems to be a direct link between the Aura and the artistic convention of painting a Halo or Aureole around the heads of saintly personages. The theory is that sanctity so strengthers the human Aura that parts of it at least become visible to noram sight

Aurasomatherapy: The Aura is the electromagnetic field which surrounds the bod.Soma refers to the being which resides in the body.It is about revitalizing and rebalancing the human Aura through a unique form of colour therapy using herbal extracts & essential oils It was devised by Vicky Wall who was born in London at the end of the first world war.Her father was a deeply religious man who had an extensive knowledge of the medicinal use of herbs and natural methods of healing.Gradually,Vicky became aware of her own healing abilities,Auric sight & Clairvoyance, but it was following 3 near death experiences and the loss of her physical sigt that her inner vision and Auric sight really developed and she was inspired to create Aurasomatherapy

Aura-soma Balance is designed to make a perfect emulsion, capable of allowing the dynamic healing energies of the specific colour vibratiions to be absorbed through the skin and the lymphatic system along with the healing extracts and essential oils A wide range of colour bottles is used, each having a colour division in the middle, both for diagnostic and treatment purposes. Each colour has a sympathetic resonance with a particular part of the body

Austromancy: Divination by means of the winds and interpreting clouds shapes

Autogenic Training: If you have ever imagined yourself succeeding in a venture where previously you might have failed, you have been engaging in a primitive, simplistic form of 'autogenic training. The more sophisticated New Age version of teh art involves the use of very specific Visualizations to achieve a particular end.The goal could be anything from increased self-conficence to better sports performance.Much of the recent scientific work on autogenic training has been done in the USSR where the interesting discovery was made that autogenics work better if carried out against a background of Baroque music. This musical style dating back to the time of Johann Sebastian Bach, who himself discovered one of its moare peculiar properties when he was called in by the Russian envoy,Count Kayserling to help Kayserling's insomnia During the early 1970's the Bulgarian scientist Dr.Georgi Lozanov, began a laboratory study of the Goldberg Variations and discovered that the aria with which they began and ended had the effect of slowing down certain body processes. He also found it brought on what he called a ' meditative state'

Bach was not the only composer to produce music of this sort.Vivaldi,Telemann,Corelli & Handel - 16th-18th-century composers of the Baroque school all crated something similar, according to Dr Lozanov's investigations, which concentrated on the largo (slow) movements of their concertos
Automatic writing: Writing executed by a medium that comes from the unconscious mind, whilein a Light Trance or altered state.Spiritualists believe automatic writing is the product of communication wtih a Spiritual being.Psychical researchers believe it emanates from the writer's own subconscious or perhaps through ESP.The writer is usually unaware of what is being written.Typically the process is much faster than ordinary handwriting and the script is larger and more expansive.Automatic writers have also produced mirror script and backwards writing, starting from the bottom right of the page and finishing at the top left.At the height of Spiritualism, automatic writing was common in seances, where it was adopted as a superior method of communicating with the dead than 'rappings' or using a planchette. Automatic writing was supposedly invaluable in the psychic excavations carried out at Glastonbury in the early twentieth century.Automatic writing has also been used by psychologists and psychiatrists in the investigation and treatment of mental illness

Autogenic Training: Art involves the use of very specific visualizations to achieve a particular end

Avalon: One of the early visions of Paradise, the Avalon of Celtic legend was supposed to be an island of apple trees far to the West.According to Geoffrey of Monmouth,it was the island where King Arthur died when taken for healing after he was wounded in his final battle. In Mists of Avalon - Marion Zimmer Bradlwy, depicts Avalon as an island essentially existing on another dimension of reality. In this she mirrored the earlier tradition that the fairy queen Morgan ruled there.New Age though sets the location of Avalon at or near Glasonbury

Avatar: Derived from the Sanskrit word 'aloatara', which means 'descent' and used in Hinduism to denote a god who has descended, by way of an incarnation, into either mortal or animal form. Also seen as a living human who is fully enlightened.Usually, avatars are miracle workers and spiritual teachers

In the great Hindu religious epic, the Bhagavad Gita, the god Vishnu promises, for the rescue of the pious and for the destruction of the evil-doers,for the establishment of the Law,I am born in every age.Ten divine incarnations of Vishu, known as avatars are recognized in popular Hinduism, including lives as a tortoise and a boar, as the heroes Krishna and Rama and evern as Gautama, the founder of Buddhism. Belief in avatars carried through strongly into Buddhist though where the Bodhisattva, or ultimate essence of enlightenment, is perceived as a divine saviour which reincarnates periodically to rescue humanity. Thus Prince Gautama was only the most recent in a long line of Buddhas, and statues have already been erected to Maitreya, the Buddha-to-come

Avebury: A village in Wiltshire, southern England, 129 km west of London, which is the site of Avebury Circle, one of the largest prehistoric ritual monuments of Britain. It consists of a circular enclosure surrounded by a huge ditch, orginally 12 meters wide and 9 meters deep and a large external bank, broken by entrances from the north, east, south and west.Inside the ditch are the reamins of a circle of one hundred standing stones up to 4 metres high and 335 meters across with stones at the centre of each. All the stones, termed megaliths are of local sandstone, called sarsen, which occurs as large boulders on the adjacent chalk downs. From the south entrance an avenue of paired standing stones- since destroyed but now partially restored, linked Avebury with the so-called Sanctuary, a double circle of stones located about 2,4 km away, which was destroyed in the eighteenth century

Avebury was built in late Neolithic times, about 2000 BC probably by the Bronze Age Beaker People.Later the site was occupied by a Saxon village. Silbury Hill, the larger prehistoric mound in Europe and Windmill Hill, site of regard the area as a psychic power center. The site has a long history as a centre of allegedly paranormal activity, including reports of Apparitions, eerie noises and stange lights. In the 1980's the locality was a major site for crop circles

Avesta: A The Zoroastrian equivalent of the Bible, dating from the 4th century AD and consisting of the recorded sayings and writings of Zoroaster. It is sometimes wrongly referred to as the Zend-Avesta

Avicenna: An Arab physician of the 11th century - noted for among other things, the interesting theory that the brain is actually a sort of 'cooling system' for psychic processes that take place elsewhere.Although framed within the medical knowledge of his time, the notion mirrors New Age thought on the concept, popularized by Aldous Huxley,of Mind-at-large

The concept suggests that the human mind is a thing in itself with the potential for far more widely-reaching perceptions than we imagine. But as an aid to survival, the brain acts as sort of reducing valve, filtering out those perceptions that are not immediately useful to physical survival.Huxley argued that psychedelic drugs like Mescaline and LSD acted to reduce the brain's efficiency as a filter, allowing the direct perceptions of Mind-at-large to flood through

Axinomancy: A term derived from the Greek 'axine' (axe) and manteia 'divination' from the heating of an axehead in the embers of a fire.Another method recorded among the ancient Greeks is that of placing an Agate stone on a red-hot axe,its motion is taken to indicate the identity of someone guilty of a crime. The term also covers other methods of prediction or answering questions, by means of an axe

Ayarveda: It is said to be a system of medicine peculiar to India, long thought of by Western practitioners as a collection of superstitions, but now attracting some attention as a valid therapy. It is a holistic system of medicine involving fasting/baths/enemas/bloodletting/diet/drugs and herbs

The word 'Ayurveda' mean the "Science of Life' - The Sanskrit 'ayur' - meaning 'life' and 'veda' - meaning knowledge. It is an ancient form of healing, that evolved out of the meditative states of the ancient seers of truth, or 'rishis' of India about 5000 years ago. There is an infinite amount of wisdom in Ayurveda. According to Ayurveda there are three basic constitutions or 'doshas. They are based on the five elements Ether (space), Air, Fire ,Water and Earth. The three doshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Everybody has a certain degree of all three of the doshas within them - but usually one or two of them are dominant. Each person is born with their own unique mixture of Vata, Pitta & Kapha. This configuration is called 'Prakruti'. This literal translation of Prakruti is 'nature'. To get the most out of your life, it is best to stay in balance with your Prakruti. Diet, fasting and purification, combined with meditation and yoga are some of the Ayurveda healing methods.
