Alternative & Holistic Healing Methods

Conventional Medicine

Through the centuries we have discovered new ways to prevent, treat and cure may kinds of illness. In ancient times, illness was seen as curse from the gods and many believed that only magicians & priests had the power to heal. Hippocrates, who is thought to be the 'founder of modern medicines', believed that Nature was at the root of illness. His belief started the search for cause and cures of disease. This formed the idea of conventional medicine which is still going on today

Holistic Treatment vs Conventional Treatment

Holistic Medicine is about treating the 'whole peron'

Many Alternative Practitioners believe that we need to take care of ourselves on 'all levels'

Conventional Practitioners usually treat specific illness,

but Holistic Practitioners believe that the mind, body and spirit are related and that 'all' must be treated

Acupressure

This treatment is similar to acupuncture, in that it comes from the Chinese way of working the body's Ch'i or energy and the meridian system. Instead of putting fine needles into the body, acupressure therapists press on the pressure points with their thumbs

Acupuncture

The Chinese treatment method of acupuncture is more than 5000 years old. It works with the meridian system, which is a network of channels in the body that Ch'i or Life Force flow through. Acupuncture aims to cure any imbalance in someone's body, which affects their overall health, so it can be used to treat anything, from depression to addiction. It involves putting small needles into certain points of the body to stimulate the Ch'i and restore balance and harmony

Affirmations (Mind Power)

Affirmations work to support the cognitive level of change. Words are articulated in a way that actively help to reframe, with positive intent - negative beliefs about ourselves or others. Experimenting with 'Affirmations' usually brings subconscious beliefs to the surface enabling us to shed their undermining influences. It is important to find suppressed ways to release the suppresed feelings, held tensions and blockages in the body - that hold these negative beliefs in place

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils from plants, usually in combination with massage. The healing properties of aromatic oils extracted from plants such as rose or lavender have been utilized for at least 5, 000 years.Beautiful fragrances have a powerful ability to infuence our mood. Each essential oil has different properties, some are stimulating while others are relaxing and some are particularly good for stress-related illnesses. Essential oils that are often use is lavender, which calms, eucalyptus an antiseptic which is good for coughs and colds, orange which lifts the spirits and rosemary and basil - used in the treatment of headaches. In aromatherapy masage, these oils are used in a 'carrier' oil such as avocado or almond, and their various healing properties are assimulated directly into the bloodstream

Aura & Chakra Balancing & Colour Therapy

Around the outside of the physical body are invisible fields of etheric, astral and mental and causal energy. Together these fields are known as an "Aura". Some holistic and medical practitioners believe that serious illness begins in the aura and works its way through to the denser physical body. People often say that serious illness can be caused by suppressing our feelings. Instead of being released from the body's cells and through the aura, they become trapped in the physical body and can make us ill. Some Psychics can see the colours of other people's auras very clearly and use the colours to diagnose and treat their illnesses. The colours mean different things, depending on the area. The right side of the body, shows your outer self, the left side, shows your emotional self and the area over your head, shows how you see yourself

Aurasomatherapy

The Aura is the electromagnetic field which surrounds the body.Soma refers to the being which resides in the body.Aurosomatherapy is about revitalizing and rebalancing the human Aura through a unique form of Colour Therapy using herbal extracts & essential oils. It was devised by Vicky Wall who was born in London at the end of the first world war.Her father was a deeply religious man who had an extensive knowledge of the medicinal use of herbs and natural methods of healing.Gradually,Vicky became aware of her own healing abilities,Auric sight & Clairvoyance, but it was following 3 near death experiences and the loss of her physical sigt that her inner vision and Auric sight really developed and she was inspired to create Aurasomatherapy

Aura-soma Balance is designed to make a perfect emulsion, capable of allowing the dynamic healing energies of the specific colour vibratiions to be absorbed through the skin and the lymphatic system along with the healing extracts and essential oils A wide range of colour bottles is used, each having a colour division in the middle, both for diagnostic and treatment purposes. Each colour has a sympathetic resonance with a particular part of the body

According to Ayurveda there are three basic constitutions or 'doshas. They are based on the five elements Ether (space), Air, Fire ,Water and Earth. The three doshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Everybody has a certain degree of all three of the doshas within them - but usually one or two of them are dominant. Each person is born with their own unique mixture of Vata, Pitta & Kapha. This configuration is called 'Prakruti'. This literal translation of Prakruti is 'nature'. To get the most out of your life, it is best to stay in balance with your Prakruti. Diet, fasting and purification, combined with meditation and yoga are some of the Ayurveda healing methods. Long-term changes in lifestyle should help prevent future illnesses as well curing existing ones

Biodynamic Therapy

This form of therapy seeks to enhance the free flow of energy in the body.It is based on the awareness that disruptions of the flow of our biological energy occur when, instead of finding ways to express our feelings, we repress important emotions. This repression causes tension and disease. The Biodynamic Therapist uses massage and body movement together with counseling, to help clients to come to terms with their emotions and recognize what they are feeling. Then to find the appropriate means of expression to address the problem

Bioenergetics

There is a way of releasing feelings and blocked energy through body movements, called bioenergetics. The theory is that unreleased anger and other emotions can cause physical pain. Massage, breathing and exercise can all be used to help a patient release the emotion, and stop the pain

Body Awareness

This was developed by Charlotte Selver out of work by Elsa Ginder.Ginder suffered from Tuberculosis, but becoming so sensitive to the workings of her own body and nervous system, she was able to allow the diseased lung to rest and so cure herself of the disease.Frits parls, the Berlyn psyhoanalyst and founder of Gestalt Therapy, was highly influenced by her work

Chiropractic

Problems in the bones and joints can effect the nerves and muscles. This can lead to symptoms, including pain appearing in other parts of the body. Chiropractors manipulate or move joints to restore proper alignment and free any tension caused by misalignment. Much of the work is centered on the spine. This is because the spinal cord is linked, either directly or indirectly to everything in the human body. Chiropractors manipulate the spine exactly where the problem is, to correct it

Colour Therapy

Colour therapies or photobiotics are alternative healing treatments that use the frequencies of colour and light to balance and harmonise the body's organs individually and the person as a whole.e.g. High Blood Pressure problems may be helped by lowering it with a blue coloured light. The use of complementary pairs of colour are an essential aspect of colour therapy. The complementary pairs used in colour therapy are red and cyan, orange and blue, yellow and violet, green and magenta. Most therapies are designed to balance both your Physical and Emotional states and many involve a diagnosis of your Aura and Chakras

Counseling

A trained counselor will support his or her clients in adjusting to the various life problems that may be causing them great distress. He or she will teach their clients a way of learning to cope with such problems. The counselor helps clients to make changes in attitude that will lead them to take action to relieve or reduce their discomfort so that may enjoy health and happiness. Many different techniques are used including Rogerian Therapy, Neurolinguistic programing, and Gestalt Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy

A Craniosacral practitioner will tune into the subtle movements of the bones and membranes of the skull and the sacrum with his or her hands.Freeing blockages in the Cranial movement increases the health of the Central Nervous System itself, thus increasing the body's ability to find balance and respond more healthily to disease

Creative Visualization Therapy (Mind Power)

This is the power of the imagination to release dormant imagery within the psyche for healing and extending consciousness. Imagination has a powerful influence on our body and mind.Guided visualization can support the imagination to amplify different layers of consciousness.Active imagination can be used to extend our access to the unconscious and help us to bring dream material to successful completion. Our imagination can really help us, if we can learn how to use our minds properly. When people are sick, they can through visualizaton, try to fight off the disease. For many people, using their minds to create positive images like this, works wonders

Crystal Healing

Gemstone and Crystals and semiprecious stones are said to contain properties and have been used since the dawning of civilization as sources of earthy light that can help us in our daily lives. They come in different shapes, sizes and colours and each is said to have a special gift to help heal the Earth and those who live here. Some people use crystals to heal the human body. They can be held, worn as jewelry or simply placed on the areas that need healing.Crystals & stones are often used with flower essence to ground and amplify them

Cupping

Specialized form of therapy from China.Combining elements of acupunture & moxibustion largely used to treat back pain & muscular disorder. Unlike acupunture and acupressure, cupping can only be used on areas of the body notably the back, which present a relatively flat surface. Traditionally, the cups are of wood, notabley bamboo, although glass is sometimes used. The are heated, usually by inserting a burning taper or a piece of moxa inside, until a partial vacuum is crated. The taper is then removed and the cup immediatley placed on the relevant body part. The partial vacuum creates, suction, causing the cup to adhere. It is left in place for a few minutes, then gently prised off. Since the suction produced is quite strong, blood is drawn into the surface vessels, leaving a temporary, reddish-pink mark and stimulating any acupuncture point in the area

Deeksha

Deeksha in Sanskrit means benediction. It is the transfer of divine energy, which over time, is designed to bring about the state of Enlightenment or Oneness in the recipient. The mind of man is like a wall which divides man from God.The deeksha is an Electrical energy that makes a hole in this wall, which we call the mind.Once this happens, the God and man can come to relate to each other. The 'divine grace' bestowed via the process of deeksha is a phenomenon that is said by believers to be ushering humanity into its phase of evolutionary consciousness. Our planet and all of humanity is currently undergoing a major evolutionalry transformation. This is impacting our environment, our social structures and our individual and collective consciousness. The transmission of deeksha is accomplished by a trained initiate who has received the transmission and training during during a 21-day silent retreat in India. The deeksha-giver then works as an empty vessel for the energy to transfer to the receiver.Deekstra is given each day to people all over the world and does not belong to any religion, nor any particular belief nor spiritual path

Dance Therapy

Using dance to discover more about our inner selves is becomming increasingly popular. It's a way of expressing our imagination and using our creative skills. We can use dance to mime or act out something in a game. Dance is a way of communicating, so it's useful in therapy for people who find it diffucult to express themselves in words. There are beautiful dances, called Universal Peace Dances, which are designed to bring inner harmony & peace. People sometimes sing words to these as well, but the graceful movements of the dance, help give the individual or group a sense of well-being and happiness. It's a bit like a moving meditation

Dowsing

Dowsing is used by many flower essence practitioners and makers to find the appropriate flower essence for a client. For dowsing a pendulum and essence is needed.A pendulum can be made made by attaching a suitable object (e.g crystal) to a piece of string, so that it swings freely. The way the pendulum swing usually indicates a 'yes' or a 'no' - indicating to the therapist which essence is needed by the client

Drumming Circles

It derives from the spiritual practises of indigenous cultures. Recent studies has shown that drumming circles therapy can be lots of fun, while increasing the immune system response that creates more robust health in the face of stress. In a Drumming circle - people sits in a circle and beats on a drum or shakes a rattle. Each member of the group plays their own rhythm, but eventually everyone's rhythms become synchronized

Faith Healing

This from of healing is practiced by religious communities and is known as faith healing or the laying-on of hands. The Lord, Jesus Christ is believed to be the greatest Faith Healer of all time. His miraculous cures are documented in the Bible, and even today many turn to Christ while in a trance state and to feel his healing hands as the Universal Energy of peace and love

The Catholic Church also has many documented cases of spontaneous healing attributed to patron Saints. THe Cathedral of St. Anne de Beaupre, outside Quebec, in Canada, offers visual testimony to the many miraculous cures that have taken place there

Members of the Pentecostal Church lay on hands in the name of God and Jesus, an the afflicted are healed by their faith- hence the term 'faith healing' and by the Power of God, which helps them to be rid of evil - the cause of the illness

Those belonging to the Spiritual Church use mediums to interpret the individual's Past Lives so that the reason for their illness can be resolved and they can become well again. Some explain that the Mind may create Psychosomatic illnesses. Even though they are experienced physically, there is no reason for them. In some cases, it is possible that Faith healing can cure illnesses that are a product of the Mind

Fantasy Role Play (FRP)

It is a phenomenon which has made fantasy role play of particular interest to some in the New Age Movement. Dololres Ashcroft-Nowicki, once described FRP as a cross between Pathworkding and ludo. While not meant altogether seriously, the similarity between FRP gaming and New Age techniques like pathworking and creative imagination is striking

Feldenkrais

This therapy is very popular with people who have spinal problems and people suffering from stroke or arthritis. It teaches you to become more aware of your body by using movement, both as part of a group and as an individual. People such as athletes and dancers use Feldenkrais, because it helps them to strengthen their backs and improve their postures. This in turn helps them to give better performances

Five Rhythms Dancing

Discovered by Gabriel Roth, these rhythms are five natural rhythms in the body that roughly correlate to the five elements. One are free to explore any movements that feels good to you in response to the music based on these beats. It is very powerful in releasing stagnant energy in the body and enlivening persons energy in a balanced and enjoyable way

Floatation Therapy

The float tank is like a large Jacuzzi (about the size of a queen size bed). Inside is about 30 cm of heated mineral water. The water is heated to your external skin temperature – about 34.5 degrees C. Because of the density of the salt solution, when you lie back in the water, your body pops to the surface like a cork – completely supported by the water (like in the dead sea). Every muscle in your body is completely supported by the water, and you no longer having to deal with gravity. You float weightless like an astronaut in space

With the temperature of the water exactly the same as your skin temperature, you begin to lose the sense of where your body ends and the water begins. The tank is completely dark inside, and totally, serenely silent. Effectively removing all environmental stimulation from your body has powerful effects on both the body and mind, the most noticeable of which is a deep physical and mental relaxation and a feeling of euphoria

When we shut out or restrict environmental stimuli, we become more aware of those things that are still available to us. In this case when we shut out light, sound, tactile sensations, gravity, other people and movement, what is left is our Self: the physical reality or our skeletal muscles, out thought, emotions, intuitions, mental images. Our awareness of these realities is of a subtlety and intensity simply not possible when our senses are directed outward, responding to external events

There is overwhelming scientific evidence that by becoming more acutely cognizant of our inner processes, we can actually exercise conscious control of them e . g . simply focusing awareness in a certain way, we can lower blood pressure, strengthen our immune system, slow heartbeat, release or inhibit the release of hormones, alleviate pain, and alter the activity of heart, muscles, brain and mind

Other benefits from floating are: Immediate reduction of stress ; Decreased levels of depression, increased creativity and productivity, decreased physical pain, helps with insomnia, speeds up recovery from sport, injuries and illness, alleviates tension headaches, the tank is an excellent tool for decreasing or removing addictions,  weight loss , self healing, and for improving the results of visualisation , meditation, and other self management and personal growth techniques

Flower Remedies

Although the native peoples of America & Australia have worked with flowers for centuries,Dr Edward Bach is one of the best known flower-remedy discoverers. Suffering from an illness himself, and curing himself with 'positive thinking' he began to work with homeopathy and other natrual therapies. He made up essences from flowers that he believed would cure the negative emotions causing illness. By the time he died, Bach created 38 flower remedies, which covered every negative emotional state of mind he could think of. Today Bach Remedies are used all over the world

Flower Remedies (New)

There are some exciting developments within Flower Essence Therapy, utilizing knowledge of their energy flows. Based upon traditional acupunture points, Drs. Vasudeva and Kadambii Barnao have developed floral acu maps, which indicate where to use their special creams and remedies.A very potent way of using the Bach Flower Remedies is given in 'New Bach Flower Body Maps Treatment by Tropical Application'. Sore body parts are also used as a means of diagnosing which particular Bach Flower Remedy is appropriate. The Flower Essence of California has developed some wonderful combined flower essences and aromatherapy oils. These are powerful because they utilize the physical properties of oils as they permeate the body via the the skin, the aromas, influence on the brain via the olfactory glands, together with the subtle properties of the flower essence taken up by the vibrational bodies

Focusing

Eugene Gendlin, a professor of psychology conducted an investigation to determine what the most proficient psychotherapists did with their clients. He discovered it was the therapists support of a natural process, which he called focusing, that enabled clients to connect their awareness to body experiences. He made it into a teachable technique called - Focusing. This technique was developed in the 1960s by Eugene Gendlin and other psychological researchers at the University of Chicago. After analysing thousands of sessions between therapists and clients, they came to the conclusion that if able to be in direct contact with their felt experience, clients stood a far better chance of benefiting from therapy.Gendlin went on to discover the essential steps for helping individuals to contact their felt experience in a way which led to growth. The essence of Focusing is to be aware from the inside of our actual experience as it is occuring in the present moment, particularly when dealing with a problem or important life issue+

Footology Therapy

Thoughts & emotions constantly create imprints on the souls of the feet.It represent our life story.Lines, wrinkles, calluses, discolorations, swellings and indentations and many other prominent insignia, eg. 'webbing of the toes', are imprints of our emotioanl world, of the paths we have wandered and experiences gained along the road.Every pair of foot soles forms an unique landscape, reflecting both emotional experiences of the past on the right foot and those taking place in the now on the left foot

A Footologist will assist in guiding the client in interpreting these features & use the information gained - to help the person to release often long forgotten emotional blockages & thereby promoting health & personal growth

It is the decoding of these impirints on the soles of the feet that has become the focus of Footology Therapy, which could unlock the emotional world of clients to release 'old blockages' and guide them to self-actualisation and healing. These features are analysed and possible interpretations are discussed with the client. Some features provide informaton about the unique characteristics, personality traits and talents of the client. Often clients are surprised by the information revealed to them, infromation about themselves that they have either never acknowledged or which they have not tapped into.Because they were the authors of the script on their feet, they insticntively know that what is being divulged to them is the truth

In the Footology process called Pilotage, a vast variety of choices for assisting in the interpreation of the different foot-features is used.By some specific 'piliting-stories' the client is guided int thier subconscious mind and assist to release long-forgotten emotional issues.Often clients fear dealing with emotional issues, but Footology Therapy is in fact a gentle,non-invasive and non-threatening modality

Suppressed emotions, for whatever reason, cause energy blockages in the system, which can lead to emotional, physical and spiritual imbalances. The client is encouraged to relive the recalled emotion, involving all their senses in order to re-enact the evernt as accurately as possible.Clients are not required to verbalise the event if the causes discomfort, but are encouraged to re-experience the event internally.Features on the feet change dramatically as emotional baggage is dealth with and released.Energetic changes are constantly updated on the foot-screen

The objectives of this healing method are therefor twofold.Firstly to build self-esteem,resilience and a positive attitude to enable the client to perceive problems as challenges by learning about that amazing, unique person she / he is.This is disclosed by our own personal sole-write-up. Secondly is to provide assistance with removing emotional blockages which otherwise would have caused obstructions in the internal energy flow and possibly cause imbalances dis-ease,but now enables self-healing & wellness

Ganzeld Stimulation

An experimental technique used in Parapsychology since in 1970's to create an enviroment of Sensory Deprivation to Stimulate the Receptivity of ESP. Ganzfeld means 'whole field' in German and refers to the blank field of vision that confronts a test subject. In a Ganzfeld test a receiver attempts to perceive thoughts and impressions transmitted by a sender. The receiver is placed in a soundproof room, wears eye cups to remove visual distractions - the eyes remain open throughout the procedure and earphones to mask sounds. The sender is seated in a similar soundproof room and given an image to focus on and transmit, selected at random by a computer. At the end of the session, the receiver is shown a selecton of images and asked to pick the target. The removal of extraneous sensory data creates a sense of disorientation in the receiver, and the subject may have periods of 'blank out' similar to a hypnotic or medittive state. According to the research results, it is during these periods that subjects are most receptive, with success rates of up to 50 per cent, compared to the expected chance rate of 5 per cent

Gestalt Therapy

This therapy take its name from a psychological theory of perception that says we are continually seeking to make wholes or 'gestalts' at all levels of our experiences.Gestalt therapists therfore guide their clients, using various techniques, which bring them into the fullest awareness in the present. This enables them to experience how they construct their lives instead of focusing on the why

Hatha Yoga

Ha means sun and Tha means moon.Hatha Yoga can be understood as the integration of opposite aspects of the person, including right and left sides of the body and mind.It is the commonly known aspect of the Yoga system an includes Pranayama - Breathing Techniques and Asanas - Stretchng postures, these include the Cobra, the plow and the tree

Hellerwork

Form of bodywork.Treating of muscular rigidity & tension through massage and physical manipulations.Along with Rolfing and certain other forms of bodywork, Hellerwork, shares the premise that physical and emotional traumas accumulate in the body over a person''s lifetime, resulting in muscular rigidity and tension.Such tensions can be broken down and the body restored to a more supple state via massage and physical manipulations, but Hellrwork goes further in that its clients are taught to link the problems arising in their bodies with problems arising in their lives, so that a therapeutic approach to one automatically influences the other

Herbalism

'Herbs' have been used in healing for as long as people have existed. Herbal practitioners believe the whole of a plant is useful in the healing process. They often make up mixtures, called infusions, by boiling the herbs with water. Remedies may also come in the form of compresses, poultices for wounds and herbal tinctures - which are concentrated solutions of herbs.Herbalism is arguably one of the oldest form of medical practice. It is enjoying an unprecedented revival of interest and practice in the New Age. Part of this development has been occasioned by an increasing realization of the side-effects frequenhtly caused by the use of drugs in conventional medical practice. Although not without its own dangers - Herbalism - which makes use of natural plant extracts rather than chemicals, is much less prone to negative interactions and side-effects.It is also quite capable of achieving results where orthodox medicine has failed

Homeopathy

Homeopathy was founded in the 18th century by a German doctor called Sammuel Hahnemann. The term is from the Greek word 'homios' which means 'like' and 'pathos' which means 'suffering' This is what the treatment is about - treating 'like with like' e.g. Bee stings are treated with a very diluted solution of 'Apis' which is made from 'Bee stings' The theory is that by adding a little more of the cause of the problem, the body is able to build up an immunity against the cause of the illness, infection or other problem. Homeopathy has become more and more popular in the last twenty to thirty years. Useful for both long and short term illness. It is safe and can be used on children, old people and even animals

Hydrotherapy

Being in water can be very healing. It's the ultimate in natural therapy. In Roman times special spa's were set up thoughout Europe, and is still popular today. Whether going for saunas, turkish baths, floatation therapy , waterjet therapy or sea water baths, hydrotherapy is great for improving the body's circulation and relaxing the nervous system

Hypnotherapy

In modern society, many of us are highly stressed. This can lead to illness, but for many people, learning to relax through hypnosis, has solved the problem. In countries all over the World hypnotherapy is now an approved medical practise. People claim to have been cured of problems as varied as Cancer, Depression, Phobia and Addiction after treatment, using hypnotherapy. With the patient under hypnosis, a hypnotherapist can feed positive suggestions, such as giving up smoking, into the subconscious mind

The use of hypnosis as a curative agent has a long, but somewhat chequered history. The ability of hypnosis to control pain is so dramatic that the technique was originally used as an Anaesthetic in surgical operations, but largely abandoned following the discovery of Ether. In recent years, however hypnosis has been making a come back in this area since its use with suitable patients substantially reduces incidences of post-operative shock and bleeding

Freud used hypnosis extensively in his early early Psychiatric Practise, although he largely abandoned it in later years in favour of Psychoanalysis. It is still used fairly extensively in Psychiatry, however, as an aid to relaxation and a door to the unconscious. Many forms of hysterical illness react directly to suggestion

But one of the most promising areas of investigation in the New Age will undoubtedly be the use of hypnosis as a therapy in purely physical illnesses. It has long been recognized that hypnosis can get rid of Warts, a Virus ailment and help in various other types of Skin Conditions. This has led to cautious experimentation in other forms of illness, with at least some evidence to suggest hypnosis may be useful even in severe maladies like Cancer

Iridology

Iridology means 'the study of the iris of the eye', which is exactly what this holistic treatment is about. The eyes, can reveal a lot about the health of an individual. Every organ & gland of the body is shown on the iris as either streaks, dots, spots or flecks. As with other holistic therapies, an iridiologist can tell you health-wise, what's out of balance and in need of attention

In 1861 a young Hungarian boy Ignatz Peczely, found an own with a broken leg,he noticed an irregularity in the iris of the owl. After nursing the own back to health and before releasing the bird back into the wild,he observed that the irregularity had been replaced with fine, crooked white lines.Ignatz went to study medicine and years later when he become a doctor,he realised that his patients had similar changes in their irises.Over the years he charted a map of the iris / body relation

Around the same time, a 14year old Swedish boy Nils Liljequist, became severely ill following a vaccination. After he began treatment with quinine and other potent drugs,he noticed a change in his iris colour. When he broke some of his ribs years later,he again noticed a change in his iris colour. In 1893 he published over 258 drawings in an atlas depicting his interpretation of the iris /body relation The two men's maps were remarkably similar and formed a basis of the science of iridology. With the advent of modern technology and improved methods of analysing the iris, iridology has moved from a 'fringe science' to a bona fide diagnostic tool

The Iris is connected directly with the brain via the nervous system, this complex structure reflects any change of disturbance in the body's function. The ultra-fine membrane of connective tissue can holistically be used to assess physical, mental, emotional & spiritual patterns and weaknesses. This blueprint provides an indication of our overall design, which areas may be at risk, what latent problems aggravate symptoms and what emotional and behavioural factors could further affect our health. By identifiying these aspects of ourselves we are able to correct imbalances, take preventative measures before problems arise and improve our averall 'wholeness'

As with Reflexology, iridology makes use of a reference chart or map of the body with specific structural markings and pigments illustrating genetic and constitutional traits relating to various internal organs and conditions. However unlike Reflexology, where massage and manipulation can alleviate and imporve some conditions, iridology is purely diagnostic.A professionally rained Iridologist can, through microscopic analysis of the iris, pupil and iner pupillary border, pinpoint the root cause of a problem and differentiate between several symptoms without relying exclusively on the chart.

Many people practise iridology with varying levels of training and expertise and it is successfully used by medical doctors, homeopaths, reflexologists, massage therapists, osteopaths, kinesiologists, pharmacists and other natural health practitioners. Some perform only a cursory examination of the iris by means of a maginifying glass or uses a computer program based 'diagnosis' for a more accurate overview of this modality

Kinesiology

A person who practices kinesiology, can find out about the body's energy levels by checking how a persons muscles respond to pressure. Once they have found the weakness, they can decide on the problem, and help by using massage on the body's acupuncture and reflex points. This clears the blocked energy and allows the body to heal itself. Very popular amongst sports people around the world

Magnetic Healing

The earth's magnetic field has a strong effect on the human body. Some believe that for everyone there is an ideal direction to sleep in, depending on the effect of the magnetic field on their body. The theory that magnets placed on the body can heal someone's illness, was popular in the 18th & 19th centuries and is still practised today when Anton Mesmer believed that he could rearrange invisible fluid in the body and bring about healing. Today there are magnets of different sizes that wearers believe can cure all kinds of ailments, such as lameness. There are magnetic bracelets and magnets to put in your shoes and many people claim to be helped by wearing them

Massage

The Greeks used massage for relaxation. The rhythmic stroking, pounding and kneading movements or masseuse, can release stress and bring a sense of ease and well-being. Massage can help people with back pain, sports injuries, headaches and even insomnia. Over the centuries different kinds of massage have been developed, such as aromatherapy

Muscle Testing

This is sometimes called Applied Kinesiology. This can be used very simply or in an extremely sophisitcated way in relation to the Meridian System

Naturopathy

The four ideas that form the basis of naturopathy are ,clean air, clean water, healthy food and lots of exercise. A Naturopathic Healer will instead of giving a prescription for treatment, recommend a change, or changes in your lifestyle, that could include a change of diet to fresh healty food and more exercise. This should help give the body enough strength, vitamins and minerals to heal itself of any problems. If you follow the four principles of naturopathy throughout your life, you should find that you have fewer illnesses and injuries

Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP)

This is a body of theory derived from Systematically Analyzing exceptional people and experiences to enable others to benefit.A major aspect of Neurolinguistic Programing Therapy is to help clients to reprogram or reframe experiences in a way that optimizes their chances for happiness and success

NLP began in the early 1970's.The originators were John Grinder, then as Associate Professor of Linguistics at the University of California, and Richard Bandler, a mathematician, computing student and Gestalt therapist. They studied three exceptional therapists, both in person and on videotape: Fritz Perls, the originator of Gestalt Therapy, Virginia Satir, the very successful family therapist and Milton Erickson, the well-known hypnotherapist. The object of their studies was to identify the patterns used by outstanding therapists and pass them on to others. They found that there were indeed similar underlying patterns, then went on to refine them, building a model which can be used for effective communication, personal change, accelerated learning and greater enjoyment of life.Gregory Bateson described NLP as the first systematic aproach towards learning to learn

NLP therapeutic techniques include mirroring and matching, reframing, pacing, anchoring and tend to be used and taught in a group setting. NPL is now one of the fastest-growing developments in Applied Psychology and has practical applications in personal development, counselling, education and business

Neurotherapy / Neuro-feedback

Is mainly used to treat conditions such as (ADHD) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Sleep disorders, but is also being used to enhance the performance of Top Achievers in the world of Sport and Business.Neurotherapy is a system of brain conditioning, through specific computer software games and electrodes - to improve concentration and performance

Osteopathy

Once regarded as an alternative therapy, Osteopathy has become part of Orthodox medical treatment in many countries.Osteopaths manipulate the body's structure in an effort to restore general health. It is based on the theory that disease is due chiefly to mechanical derangement of the tissues, with special emphasis on restoring the structural integrity of the spine through manipulation.Osteopaths, like chiropractors, look at the way a patient hold their body. They can treat back pains, joint pains, headaches and digestive problems. Osteopathy can even help someone get their body back into alignment after childbirth. Unlike chiropractors, osteopaths may manipulate areas of the body where pain is not found, in order to treat areas where it is. They also us massage as part of the treatment, and you may find that a course of treatment over several weeks or month is needed to correct some problems, especially those that are caused by bad posture

Past Life Regression Therapy

Form of psychotherapy. In various forms of Psychotherapy, patients are required to explore memories of events which have contributed to current emotional problems.A great many such events occur in childhood, but memories of childhood are not always easy to regain.Consequently Psychiatrists may elect to make use of drugs or techniques like Hypnosis in order to produce the material required for analysis

The process of pushing back towards childhood is known by the Psychoanalytic term of 'Regression' Within the overall phenomenon of hypnosis, the reality of regression is well established.Even Professor H.J.Eysenck, who dismisses certain of the more extreme claims for the technique as 'absurb', wholly accepts the evidence of remarkable memory improvement presented by regression subjects.Such evidence is, in fact extremely interesting. When regressed to an early age, the subject will typically adopt the limited vocabulary of that age and may even begin to speak in a childlike tone.Personality changes occur.Behaviour patterns become those of the suggested age level. If a drawing is requested, it shows a childlike technique. Most interesting of all are the handwriting changes, which often conform precisely to handwriting samples produced by the subject when he was actually of the age suggested

Examination of eye movement indicates that when subjects are regressed to an early age, their ocular coordination degenerates. Some Psychoanalysts have theorized that the most troublesome experiences might actually be the very earliest, the moment of birth for example.Their patients reporteed recall of cradle events and even the birth trauma itself.A few claimed to be able to remember life within the womb.A handful of patients produced more distant memories still. The presented apparent recall of lives beyond the womb

Analysts wondered if the respectable process of regression had gone rogue and was producing fantasies or halucinations. It seemed a likely explantion.Because if the reports of these few patients were correct, it would mean they had actually lived before- and that opened up a whole series of scientific an Philosophical difficulties. It is probably fair to say the Psychiatric community dealt with these difficulties by ignoring Past Life Regression altogether. The technique was taken up an carried forward largely by individuals outside the medical profession with an interest in Reincarnation and/or Psychical Research

From their work, a substantial body of literature has built up. From this literature, it is clear that different subjects react to regression in different ways, but many actually relive Past Live Experiences in a manner they find indistinguishabel from physical reality. In his 'Encounters with the Past'-Peter Moss, Sidgwick & Jackson-1979', researcher Joe Keeton tells of a subject who, when regressed, found herself at the 'Assizes' and accused of witchcraft. It was the start of a 20min session marked by steadily growing tension. The trial was held at Chelmsford Assizes in 1556.Keeton's subject, a 23 year old businesswomen was reliving the experience of an accused 17 year old, who was stripped and pricked as part of an interrogation which left her screaming in terror

Pathworking

Guided Imagery. The foremost modern exponent of the art, Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki, has defined pathworking as a journey between this side of the mental worlds and the other side - which offers a path, a map through the landscapes of the mind. Pathworking are doorwalys between the known and the physical and the unknown and the non-corporeal. They accomplish their work through the medium of the creative imagination. It can and do casue actual physical effects in the everyday world

Although the term 'pathworking' is derived from Qabalistic practice, the technique itself is not specifically Qabalistic and appears under a variety of names, ancient and modern, including 'guided meditation' / active imagination / thought building / and even fantasy role play- FRP. When used as esoteric tools, such workings serve a variety of puposes, from initiation to the channelling of power. Some make use of visual symbols, others rely on detailed verbal instructions to paint pictures in the mind

Pathworking are not new. They were used in early Egypt and Sumer, the first known human civilization, and are believed to have formed an important part of Chaldean star magic. But while hints and aspects of pathworking leaked out to some degree from age to age, a full esoteric exposition remained the exclusive progative of initiate occultists until the early 1980's when Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki decided to go public with the technique

Her first book on the subject was The Shining Paths-The Aquarian Press 1983, a collection of verbal parthworkings centred on the Qabalistic Tree of LIfe. Four years later, she was in print again with Highways of the Mind-The Aquarian Press 1987, an even more detailed exposition of the art and one which contains a fascinating history of its development

Photobiotics - Colour Therapy

Colour therapies or photobiotics are alternative healing treatments that use the frequencies of colour and light to balance and harmonise the body's organs individually and the person as a whole.E.g. High Blood Pressure problems may be helped by lowering it with a blue coloured light. The use of complementary pairs of colour are an essential aspect of colour therapy. The complementary pairs used in colour therapy are red and cyan, orange and blue, yellow and violet, green and magenta. Most therapies are designed to balance both your Physical and Emotional states and many involve a diagnosis of your Aura and Chakras

Polarity Therapy

This is a holistic healing system. It aims to balance the Energy Circuits of the body through diet, touch, exercise, and attitude. From an integrated theoretical an practical base the therapist uses knowledge and techniques of touch that are known as the separate techniques of Craniosacral therapy, Acupressure, Osteopathy and Reflexology

Pranic Healing

Pranic Healing is a revolutionary and comprehensive system of natural healing techniques that utilizes prana to treat various illnesses. Prana is a Sanskrit word meaning 'life-force'. This is the invisible bio-energy or vital energy that keeps the body alive and maintains a state of good health. The Japanese call this subtle energy 'Ki', the Chinese 'Chi', while the Greeks refer to it as 'Pneuma'. In Polynesian it is known as 'Mana', and in Hebrew, 'Ruach' - meaning 'Breath of Life'. As an art and science, Pranic Healing was widely practiced in ancient civilizations in China , Egypt and India

Primal Therapy

Founded by Arthure Janov, primal therapy is concerned wiht re-experiencing and giving physical expression to pain and hurt of childhood - through screaming and crying. This is done on order to dissolve neurosis. The therapy is carried out in a sound-proof, softly lit room with plenty of cushions to curl up on.The role of the therapist is to be supportive in this process and help in the healing of pain

Psychic Healing

The 'Healer' puts their hands on or near the person's body and releases their pain. Apparently they do this by channeling or using Universal Energy. Some psychic healers claim to be able to heal people hundreds of kilometers away. They do this by sending their positive energy to the ill person through thought, instead of actually touching them. People treated this way, has reported actually feeling the energy-flow into their bodies

Psychic Self Defence

Normally involves the visualization of a defensive structure. Most froms of Psychical attack work through the Astral Plane, making contact with the indended victim and manifesting, usually undetected in his/her subconscious mind.Because of the Astral association, effective defence will normally involve the visualization of a defensive structure which, it is hoped , is then established sufficiently strongly on the Astral Plane to stop external influences coming in.Perhaps the simplest structure involves imagining oneself surrounded by a spinning wall of light. But the principle remains the same whether or not one adopts this technique or opts for a more elaborate approach like the banishing Pentagram Ritual which can be used to safeguard an individual or group as well as clearing a space for work

Psychic Surgery

Often performed in a trance state, sometimes without touching the physical body, but more dramatically by psychic surgeons in the Phillipines and Brazil involving phsyical operations followed by immediate healing of the wound

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy can in practice, overlap with counseling, but its emphasis is on the exploration over time of the process that causes distress. Problems are explored in depth, in terms of their meaning and significance in the overall life pattern of the client. The aim of Neurolinguistic Therapy is self-renewal from actively understanding and making the most of psychological resources

Radionics

Invented in the 1920s by an American, Albert Abrams. This technique involves healing at a distance with the aid of a special radionic instrument - a mysterious black box. Before commencing treatment with the box, the practitioner wil ask the client for a 'witness' such as a lock of hair or a drop of blood, which is then used fo diagnostic purposes. The Radionics Practitioner may also recommend that his or her client uses Flower Essences or Homeopathic Medicines

The term 'radiesthesia' denotes the medical use of Dowsing, pioneered in France during the 19th century.Radionics is the mechanincal counterpart of Radiesthesia, originally developed by the San Francisco neurologist, Dr Albert Abrams.Dr Abrams theorizes that since the human body was known to emit radiation, it should be possible to detect illness. After years of experimentation, he developed a 'Reflexoscope' which he claimed could differentiate between cancer, tuberculosis and syphilis

The reflexoscope was a diagnostic tool, but Dr Abrams surmised it should be possible to design therapeutic instruments which would act on the body's radiation.Eventually with the aid of an engineer, he built one which became known as the 'Oscilloclast' or, more popularly, 'Abrams Box. Perhaps surprisingly, it worked. In 1925, a British Commission of Inquiry set up to examine results obtained by the Box, subsequently reported 'The fundamental proposition underlying the so-called ERA (Electronic Reaction of Abrams) is established to a very high degree of probability. Other practitioners followed in Dr Abrams's footsteps and constructed radionic devices of their own, including the 'black box' of George de la Warr, which was the subject of a court action during the 1960's.Despite the fact that they could find no scientific explanation for its effect, the judges decided that the box actually worked and produced cures as claimed

Despite such favourable decisions, radionics has traditionally been bedevilled by two problems. One is the inconsistency of the method, which seems to rely as much on the practitioner's sensitivity and well-being than on machinery involved. The other is the established fact that radionics can diagnose and treat patients in their absence, using no more than a small blood or urine sample - something which has so far defied a rational explanaion

Reflexology

This type of healing probably goes back to Egyptian times, and is also used by the native peoples of North and South America. It is said that our feet, connects us to the Earth and therefore to the Energies of the Universe. Therefore your feet can tell a reflexologist all there is to know about what's going on in your body. Every area on each feet represents a human organ, a gland or other part of the body

A form of Pain Relief Therapy commonly linked with Acupuncture, but based on somewhat different principles in which pain relief and the alleviation of certain ailments is achieved by pressure on specific areas of the feet. Some claims that it originated in China, but was first used in the West by Dr William Fitzgerald, an ENT Specialist interested in Acupuncture

According to Reflexolgoy theory, specific foot zones, notably on the soles, are linked to every important organ, gland and muscle group in the body. When a physical disturbance occurs, this is reflected in the relevant foot zone, which produces crystalline deposits beneath the skin.Reflexologists, works the zone in order to break down the crystals, which then brings relief to the afflicted area.Whatever the crystalline structures may or may not be present, there is no doubt at all that Reflexology, which appears to have a normalizing or hamonizing effect on the body, but the treatment itself can be painful

Rebirthing Therapy

Many cultures and faith systems believe that we have more than one life. This may be why we sometimes have fears and phobias we can't explain. Regression therapists use hypnosis to take their patients back to earlier in their life, or a former life, to trace the origins of a problem or anxiety. Once they know how and why the problem started, it's much easier to deal with

Rebirthing employs various techniques to help with overcoming traumas which are related to birth, by reliving the process of birth. This can provide valuable insights. In the 1970's, on the West coast of America, Leonard Orr used deep breathing exercises to take the individual back to birth an life in the womb.Sometimes in rebirthing the client adopts the foetal position while gentle pressure is applied to the head and feet to simulate life in the womb.Frank Lake, an English psychiatrist, believed that various diseases like migrane, asthma and schizophrenia, had their origins in prenatal experiences.Arthur Hanow added another dimension to rebirthing with 'the primal scream' the scream which should be made at the time of birth to relieve the pain

Reichian Therapy

Aim is to dissolve the body armour and release blocked physical and emotional energy.Reichian therapy has contributed to contemporary bodywork, particularly bioenergetics, Rolfing and Feldenkreis. It is based on Reich's concept of 'bio-energy flow' through the body. When emotions is impaired. The body hold these repressons as 'body-armour'.The aim of Reichian therapy is to dissolve the body armour and release the blocked physical and emotional energy.Several approaches are used, including deep breathing, deep massage, working with facial expressions to express true emotions, chest work, convulsive reflex-work, maintaining stress positions and active movements such as kicking and stamping. It can be both physically and emotionally painful, but there is little doubt that it achieves results. Those whocan stay the course report substantial improvements in their levels of awareness and general well-being, with a notable enhancement of their sex lives

Reiki

Reiki means 'Universal Life Force'. This is a Japanese form of spiritual & energy healing. Reiki therapists place their hands in certain positions on the body. They use sacred symbols, and believe that they act as a channel for the Universal Energy to come through in order to help the patient heal. This usually produces a profound state of relaxation that revitalizes and balances the body, supporting the patients natural ability to heal themselves.Reiki is becoming popular as an alternative treatment

Rogerian Therapy

Rogerian Therapy is the most common Basic Training fo Counselors world-wide.Therapists are trained to develop attitudes of completely respecting, empathically understanding and being real with their clients. This melts any defeses created by harsh parenting and empowers the client to apply these attituted to themselves

Rolfing

Also sometimes referred to as Structural Intergration.Muscular realignment therapy was developed by Ida Rolf to eliminate eliminate chronic back & neck pain by releasing muscles frozen by stress

Shiatsu

This is a Japanese art of massage, that works with the same pressure points on the body that are used for acupuncture. The idea is to improve blood flow and release muscle tension an to get the energy flowing smoothly throughout the body

Tai Chi

This gentle kind of martial art has been around for more than 2000 years, but Tai Chi reached its present form in the 1700s. It's based on balancing the opposing energies of Yin and Yang. The idea is, that you develop banlance and flexibility while bringing the mind, body and spirit into greater harmony. All the movements become automatic

Therapeutic Touch

This popular treatment of 'laying on of hands' is known as therapeutic touch. It involves one person, called a sender, placing their hands on, or near the affected part of the other person - called the receiver. The sender sends relaxed, healing forces (energies) through their hands. This can result in the patient becoming much more relaxed, with a quieter tone of voice and slower more relaxed breathing

Tissue Salts

Dr. Schussler (1821-1898) believed that all disease result from an imbalance of one or more of the 12 basic tissue salts. One salt is Nat.phos. or Natrium phosphoricum, which is commonly called phosphate of soda, and regulates the acid level in the cells. These salts could be used for indigestion, nausea or heartburn, and can be found in most health food stores

Vibrational Therapy

Medical practitioners often use a vega machine. This is based on the principle of electrical resistance matching the energy from an essence to the energy from a person. Most often acupuncture points are tested. When there is a match to the right essence, the machine makes a noise

Yoga

The word 'Yoga' means 'to yoke' or 'to join'. the ultimate Yoga aim is to enable the practitioner to attain enlightment - to rejoin the soul with the Supreme Being. To achieve this, Yogis use the eight limbs of this system of self-transformation. They are Yama - abstinence, Nniyama - Cultivation of purity, Asana - physical posture, Pranayama - breath control, Pratyaharea - nondistraction, Dharana - concentration, Dhyana - contemplation or meditation, Samadhi - bliss of union
