Addictions & Obsessions
Have you got an Addictive Personality ? People with addictive personalities are more susceptible to habit forming and can get hooked on almost anything, from glue to exercise. Addiction can be a road wrongly taken - acting as a replacement for something we really need, such as confidence, self-esteem, stability, friendship or other support. The answer lies in developing our inner strenght and self-esteem, loving ourselves and accepting ourselves for who we are Addiction An addiction is a habit that is very difficult to give up. There are many kinds of addictions and many substances to become addicted to. Drugs and alcohol might seem like fun things to try, but they are potentially dangerous and damaging and can ruin a person's life
Tobacco - can harm Some teenagers take up smoking because they think that it is "cool" and that it makes them look grown-up But the truth is, tobacco in cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco, contains a harmful drug called - nicotine, a strongly addictive substance Smoking is also harmful to your health and causes cancer, heart & lung disease and other chronic respiratory problems It even effects the health of other people, who inhale the smoke of a smoker. Children, the sick and the elderly are most at risk Futhermore not only is it a very expensive habit It realy makes your breath, clothes, and hair smell bad - and that is not so "cool"
Alcohol abuse - can harm and kill
There is nothing wrong if adults enjoy a glass of wine or beer occasionally. But drinking too much turns the pleasure into a huge problem. Although alcohol is legal in many countries, it is also a - drug and can become addictive and effect our health and behaviour in a very negative way. Often people become dependent on drink, because they don't have much self-confidence or are experiencing issues they would like to escape from - and find that drink can help them feel better. But the feel-good factor doesn't always last and as time goes on, they need to drink more to achieve the same effect. As with any drug, it can become a vicious circle, where a person can't cope without it. It starts controling & ruining your life at the same time ** see Foetal Alcohol Syndrome ** ** see The destructive power of Alcohol**
Caffeine - the most popular drug in the world Coffee first came from Arabia to Europe as a medicine, rather than a drink. But is today one of the most popular drugs in the world. Coffee, tea, cola and cocoa, contains a drug called - caffeine. This boosts physical energy, gives us a mental lift. One or two cups of coffee in the morning can improve your brain power for up to six hours, but more, can literally make you feel very ill and shaky. Also making it difficult to sleep and can even cause heart and other related disease in the long run. The cocoa in chocolate causes the release of chemicals in your brain - called endorphins, which make you feel good, but the effect doesn't last very long
Drugs - The Road to Destruction A drug, is any chemical substance that affects the organs of the body. This includes medicines prescribed to treat disease and remedies to cure ailments. Certain drugs can alter our mood and give us temporary relief from unwanted feelings. Unfortunately some people take mood-altering drugs for pleasure rather than as a medication. This can change a person's behaviour drastically, so that you are no longer being true to yourself. The scary part is, that these drugs can also lead to chronic dependancy, personality change and criminal behaviour. Once addicted to drugs - trying to kick the habit then, is a very painful and hard road with terrible withdrawal symptoms. A road better avoided
